Children are attracted to bright colours.

When you think about it, it’s the brightly coloured fruits that are often the sweetest, most ripe and packed with nutrition.

While I love natural tones of our environment, these bright colours have been really fun to work with!

After colouring our Rainbow Nuts the other day, we have been using them for all sorts of activities.

Our beloved Kmart Tray with some coloured bowls and our Rainbow Nuts attracted Miss 18m attention straight away.

As she sat down next to the tray her eyes were wide, smile from ear to ear and fingers were twitching to get to it!

I asked her to put the gumnuts into the coinciding bowl and showed her using the tongs I had also provided.

Her fingers fumbled with the tongs. She started off by gripping each side with a hand and opening and closing them that way. While I praise her efforts, they were not successful and before to long she retired them to the outer of the tray.

In their place, her chubby little hands reached for the nuts. They were the perfect size for her to grasp and pull towards her. She inspected them before looking at me for approval before placing the nut into a bowl.

Truth be told, most of the time the Nut was placed in the wrong colour bowl however I still see this activity as a success. We spoke about the colours, creating an emphasis on the pronunciation of the word. Games like this are only going to assist her in her comprehension regarding colours identification, being able to match them as well as being able to name them.

I look forward to practising this activity over time to come. I’m curious if she will perceive it the same as today…. perhaps next time her orientations will differ? Find out then I guess!
